Tamla Motown: from May 1965

The American Motown record label was founded by Berry Gordy Jr. in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan, in the United States. The name, a combination of 'motor' and 'town', is also the nickname for Detroit. Motown played an important role in the racial integration of music and, in the 1960s, Motown and its subsidiaries were the most successful producers of what was known as 'The Motown Sound', a style of pop/soul music. During the Sixties Motown achieved remarkable success for a comparatively small record company with 79 records in the 'Billboard' Top Ten during the decade.

Berry Gordy was born in 1929, the seventh of eight children. His 'careers' prior to his involvement in the world of entertainment included boxer, record store owner, assembly line worker and he served in the US Army from 1951, during the Korean war. Talented in his own right, he was involved in the writing of the Jackie Wilson songs 'Reet Petite', 'Lonely Teardrops', 'That's Why', I'll Be Satisfied' and 'To Be Loved', but wanted to be involved more deeply in the record industry and, with an $800 dollar loan, started to build what was to become the 'Motown' empire.

He had previously tried producing records himself, the first of which was 'Ooh Shucks' by The Five Stars, which was released in 1957 on George Goldner's Mark X label. In the same year he saw The Miracles, and lead singer William 'Smokey' Robinson, at a Detroit talent show and decided that he wanted to produce them, creating the single 'Got a Job' which was released through Goldner on End records. He also worked on productions with other artists including brothers Brian and Eddie Holland, Marv Johnson and, with the first song to be published by his own production company, Jobete, an artist called Herman Griffin with the song 'I Need You' on the H.O.B. label.

With the loan money he originally set up two separate labels (Tamla Records and Motown Records) on January 12th 1959 to avoid accusations of payola should DJs play too many songs from one of the labels. The two labels actually used the same writers, producers and artists and were formally incorporated together as Motown Record Corporation on April 14th, 1960. More subsidiary labels were introduced later including Gordy Records, Soul Records and VIP Records but the Motown Record Corporation actually controlled all of these labels.

The nickname given to Motown's first office HQ was 'Hitsville U.S.A.' - a former photographic studio situated at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan which was purchased by Berry Gordy in 1959. The premises were converted into administrative offices and recording studios and were open for 22 hours a day, only closing from 8am to 10am for necessary maintenance. Artists were often shuffled between labels for marketing reasons but all of these labels are generally considered to be 'Motown', regardless of whether they were released under the actual 'Motown' label itself. The two labels were combined in 1961 to become Tamla Motown. A local group called The Primettes (the members of which were still at school) auditioned for him in 1960 and they signed for him in January 1961, when they graduated, to become The Supremes. Their career went on to make them the third largest-selling artists in record history, behind Elvis Presley and The Beatles.

Also in 1960 he met Mary Wells, at a nightclub, who was to become the first real 'Motown star' and in the same year he acquired the contract of Marvin Gaye from his brother-in-law, Harvey Fuqua, who was lead singer with The Moonglows of which Gaye was a member. The first white group to record with 'Motown' were actually Nick and The Jaguars, a trio from Michigan, who recorded instrumentals released on Tamla 5501 in that year, before the 'normal' 55500 label series was established. The first white vocal group were The Valadiers, who were recommended by Jackie Wilson and recorded first on the Miracle label in 1961, with two further releases on the new subsidiary in 1962.
1961 was to see Motown's first 'million seller' with The Miracles' 'Shop Around', which reached No2 in the US charts.

Ronnie White of the Miracles arranged the audition of an eleven year old blind singer named Stevland Morris, who Gordy described as 'a wonder', and was signed up to record under the name 'Little Stevie Wonder'. His first hit was a live recording made at the Regal theater in Chicago. Titled 'Fingertips Part 2', it reached No1 in 1963 (Motown's first No1) and is interesting in that, towards the end of the record, a band member can be heard saying "what key, what key?" as the backing band who had just come on stage thought he had finished but he was singing a short reprise in response to audience applause.
Berry Gordy - Tamla Motown

For a number of years, 'Smokey' Robinson was the only artist allowed to produce his own recordings. Berry generally used specific producers for specific artists and so it was that Robinson produced Mary Wells, The Temptations and The Miracles, Holland-Dozier-Holland produced The Four Tops and The Supremes and Mickey Stevenson produced Marvin Gaye and The Marvelettes. Stevie Wonder was produced by Clarence Paul and Martha and The Vandellas were produced by both H-D-H and Mickey Stevenson. Berry produced many of the recordings during the early years, along with other producers such as Earl Van Dyke, Johnny Griffith, Henry Cosby, Joe Hunter and his brother-in law Harvey Fuqua. 'Masters' were recorded on three tracks until late 1964 when an 8-track machine was designed by Motown's Head of Engineering, Mike McLean. Thirteen Motown singles reached top ten in the charts during 1967 with two by The Supremes reaching No1.

1968 saw a further ten 'top 10' singles and another two chart-toppers in The Supremes and Marvin Gaye. Holland, Dozier, and Holland left the company in 1968 and were to produce no further records for two years due to the subsequent lawsuits. The Jackson 5 were signed to Motown in 1969 and four of their first six singles between 1969 and 1971 made the No1 chart position. As a result of the H-D-H debacle, writing and production on Jackson 5 releases were credited to 'The Corporation', a group consisting of Berry Gordy, Fonzie Mizell, Freddie Perren and Deke Richards. 1969 saw twelve more 'top 10s' including three No1s, and the beginning of the 'Rare Earth' label, formed to handle white psychedelic rock and R&B alternatives, which was handled by the Los Angeles offices. In June 1972 Motown closed its Detroit offices, moving to Los Angeles, heralding what many believe was the end of the creative Motown era.
