Sixties City - The Sound of Music
Sixties City - Mary Poppins
Mary Poppins

Musical film is a particular genre developed from the stage musical after the emergence of sound film technology. The concept is a story line delivered with words, interspersed with music (and sometimes dancing), normally to advance the storyline or the characters but sometimes only acting as a break to the plot. The main differences between the two is the use in film of lavish background scenery and locations which a theatre is obviously unable to provide. The Fifties and Sixties arguably produced some of the best musical shows and films of all time, many of which are still very much loved today. Though musicals had declined by the 1960s and would decline further in the next decade, of the 'top 25' best selling musical film soundtracks of all time, seven came from the Sixties and three from the Fifties. The story of the nanny who comes to the aid of the Banks family was Julie Andrews' feature film debut. Set in 1910 Edwardian London, she takes us on a mixed live action and animation journey as the magical 'practically perfect' Mary Poppins from first arriving out of the sky at 17 Cherry Tree Lane in answer to an advert for a replacement nanny until the day comes when 'the wind changes' and she knows she's no longer needed. The film was released in 1964 (August 27th in Los Angeles, September 24th in New York, December 23rd in the UK) and was based on the original stories by P.L.Travers.

The film was directed by Robert Stevenson with screenplay by Bill Walsh and Don DaGradia and produced by Walt Disney at the Disney Studios in Burbank, California, worldwide it grossed nearly $103 million becoming the highest grossing film of the year. The music was written by Richard M and Robert B Sherman with Irwin Costal arranging and conducting the film's score giving rise to a whole host of memorable songs including 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious', 'A Spoonful of Sugar', 'Step in Time' and 'Feed the Birds'.

Supporting cast included Dick van Dyke as her friend (and man of many jobs) Bert, David Tomlinson as the children's father and Glynis Johns as their mother. Dick was mocked for his Cockney accent but it was felt this added to the charm of the film rather than detracting from it. Julie won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, a BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles, a Golden Globe for Best Actress-Comedy or Musical and the Laurel Award for Musical Performance Female; she was also nominated for Best Actress by the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and in 2021 she won the OFTA Award for Best Character.

The film overall was nominated for and took a whole host of awards, some of which included both Julie and Dick. A biographical drama, 'Saving Mr Banks', about the making of the film was released in 2013 and a follow up to the film itself, 'Mary Poppins Returns' was released in 2018.
