Sixties City - Dr WhoThe Second Doctor
FIFTH SEASON - 2nd September 1967 to 1st June 1968

In 2013 BBC master tapes from the 1960s featuring missing episodes of Doctor Who were recovered in Nigeria, Africa. The BBC re-mastered the tapes and made two stories, 'The Enemy of the World' and 'The Web of Fear'. Eleven episodes were discovered, nine of which had not been seen for 46 years, by tracking records of tape shipments made by the BBC to Africa for transmission. 'The Enemy of the World' is a six-part story which first aired in December 1967. The story features Patrick Troughton as both the Doctor and his antagonist, Ramon Salamander, with companions Jamie (Frazer Hines) and Victoria (Deborah Watling). Episode 3 was the only existing copy prior to this. The 1968 six-part story, 'The Web of Fear', also stars Troughton, Hines and Watling and introduces Nicholas Courtney as Colonel (later Brigadier) Lethbridge-Stewart for the first time. Episode 3 was not recovered but a BBC restoration team reconstructed a version of this episode using some of the 37 still images available together with the original soundtrack.

This was the first story to introduce an explanation of The Doctor's origin and the race of Time Lords,
and the last Dr.Who television production of the Sixties. Jon Pertwee took over the mantle from
Patrick Troughton, becoming the third incarnation of The Doctor in the seventh season starting on
3rd January 1970, with a new assistant in the form of Caroline John as Liz Shaw.
From Season 7 onwards the programme was produced in colour.
